Mila On the Move!

Mila has been working hard in Physical Therapy to strengthen her muscles. Her goal right now is crawling. We know crawling is so important to develop not only core, shoulder, arm and hip muscles, but it is also important for brain development. I asked Mila's physical therapist if it's common for kids with Down Syndrome to walk before they crawl because Mila seems closer to walking than crawling. She said it is very common for kids with low muscle tone and that we'll just keep trying to get her to work on both crawling and walking. Zoya crawled first but very soon after she learned to crawl she was walking so she didn't crawl for that long.

Mila is starting to scoot around and try to figure out how to get her body to move when she is on her belly. She seems to have a technique unlike any other I've seen!

Here is the "lunge"

This is my favorite....she digs her right toe in and flings her left leg to lurch herself forward!

Trying to get her knees under her and pull with her arms...

A face also works as a third arm at times

Love that smile!

Working hard!

The "bear" pose that she hasn't quite figured out how to move forward in yet (only backward)

Extra points for creativity but not so much for form!

"How many push ups did you say I have to do?"

So close!
Her funny face!
And Mila has been standing and finally holding on with only her arms and not using her body to support herself! She even took the teeniest tiniest baby step using her toy walker during PT!!! She loves being upright. After about 3-5 minutes of standing her body starts shaking because she is working so hard so I help her to sit down and she gets mad and tries to pull right back up to standing! My frail little baby is getting so strong!
This picture reminds me of a little old lady with her dress, sneakers, and walker :)

Go, Mila, Go! We are so proud of your determined attitude! You have been a fighter from the beginning and we're seeing that more and more every single day!

    1. Squishy seems to be a term more than just a few people use to refer to Mila...so accurate heheh!

  2. I love the "lunge", it looks like she is doing the worm! I'm willing to bet that Miss Mila will be mobile in one form or another before this month is over.

  4. You are hilarious! As a yoga participant, I have to say that I notices several yoga poses: cobra, downward dog, a variation of the child's pose, and maybe a couple of others.

    1. My neighbor said the SAME thing and even noted some of the same positions you did! Who knew I had a real Yoga-baby? :)

  5. Your child is SO unique. She definitely wins for "best textbook display of flexibility associated with Down syndrome!" One of my favorite memories is of Shawn toting her around the pool while she's got herself folded in half like a pretzel.

  8. Claire crawled for an ENTIRE year. While I knew it was good for her, I was so ready for her to get up on her feet. :)

    1. Wow, that's crazy!!! But such good work for brain development! That brain of hers should be firing away with all that crawling LOL! I was reading a Pat Winders article today and thought of you! We're going back to basics with some very basic skills trying to get Mila to do them the RIGHT way to help her down the line further!

  9. Dear Sarah, has your PT had you use Hip Helpers? When you think about back to basics and training the brain and muscles to do things the right way, there's nothing better for our little ones... Susanna Musser can give you MAJOR sermon about them if you want :-) But if your PT hasn't insisted, or if she hasn't even mentioned them, you might want to buy or make a pair to see how fast they change things!

    1. Yes, we have the hip helpers, unfortunately with Mila's...ahem....chunky proportions they make her spit up after wearing them for 20 minutes (pretty much every single time we put them on her this happens)...we've tried different sizes, but once the waist size works out okay then they are too long and put pressure on her knees....one reader suggested sewing a pair of leggins together to just above the knee so I'm working on that! I know you can order custom ones too but she is growing so fast we'd need a new pair a month! We are working hard on retraining her brain and teaching her how to roll the right way, for example...backing up a bit and making sure she is not only mastering the skills, but doing them in the correct form because that is the foundation that we will build upon for all of her gross motor skills!
